The Goethe-Zertifikat is the Goethe-Institut's family of German exams, with one certificate for each CEFR level from A1 to C2. Most German-taught bachelor's and master's programmes ask for C1, and the certificate is recognised across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Each level also carries its own historic name: A1 is Start Deutsch 1, A2 is Start Deutsch 2 (or Fit in Deutsch 2 for younger candidates), and B1 is Zertifikat Deutsch. C2 is formally the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom.
